Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary of Confederation on July 1 and the country is celebrating in a big way. Dubbed Canada150, major events, activities, and festivals are happening across the country.
The four-day celebration officially started on June 21st with National Aboriginal Day, then on June 24th with Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, and Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27. The big finale is on July 1st for Canada Day.
Celebrations Leading Up to Canada Day
National Aboriginal Day – This day highlights the culture, unique accomplishments, and significant contributions of Canada’s Indigenous people.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day – This day celebrates the culture and heritage of Canada’s Francophones. Celebrations are planned across the country, especially in Quebec, where June 24 has officially been declared the National Holiday.
Canadian Multiculturalism Day – In 2002, the Canadian Government set aside June 27 of each year to celebrate Canada’s diversity and commitment to democracy, equality, and mutual respect. This year, celebrations and festivities will occur coast to coast, with major performances featuring well-known Canadian artists.
Parks Canada – Throughout 2017, Parks Canada is offering free admission for Canadians and visitors alike to all national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas operated by Parks Canada.
And the Big Event … Canada Day
July 1 marks the 150th anniversary of Confederation in Canada. Known as Canada 150, this party has been in the planning stages since 2010.
Starting on Friday and continuing through the weekend, there will be celebrations in 19 Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Quebec City, Ottawa, and Montreal. Montreal is also celebrating its 375th birthday this year. As well, there are festivities planned in communities across the country.
